Entry 2

For this blog, I will be discussing some of the things we went over in week 3 of class. Where we mainly spoke about the depiction of women in the work places and the overall discrimination of women as a whole in the media.

The group presentation that started the class out, showed us a video that really stuck out to me in terms of getting the message across for how women are viewed by all people in today's society. The video begins with kids of all ages, boys and girls, being asked to demonstrate things as a girl would do them. “Throw like a girl.” “Run like a girl.” To which all of the boys and girls from ages 6-17, showed themselves doing things in a much weaker tone than they actually could. Showing them swinging a bat with the most minimal athletic ability. Then towards the end of the video, they give them a speech about where this narrative came from and why it should not still be around. By the end of the video all of the kids are doing things differently once they realize the term “like a girl,” should not be a bad thing.

This was so intriguing to me because we have all heard this term no matter where we grew up. Thinking on this term makes me realize how much it truly invalidates women all over. Many of the greatest athletes on earth are women and could do what they do better than anyone in the world and people to this day still say things like that. It leaves the question as to why? Why are we not able to move on as a society and just recognize one another as human beings? We should be celebrating our successes, not bashing them. A WNBA championship should mean as much as an NBA championship.
