Entry 1

For my first entry I will discuss my stance and understanding of the materials we covered in week two of our class. One of the things that first came to mind in this week's material was the Key and Peele video titled “Hoodie.” This is a quick video that shows a Black man walking home from school through a neighborhood and the white people acting rather terrified of him. It starts with a mom pulling her two kids inside from playing as the man walks down the sidewalk. Then we see a white man mowing his lawn who is staring this man down with hostility on his face. The punchline of the video is when a cop is driving up on this man and the young man pulls his hoodie over his head and we see a white face on the outside of this hoodie. This fakes the cop out and gets him off his case.

What this video is depicting and trying to tell us is that many white people in suburban areas often think poorly or think of the black community as dangerous. Leading to many weird stares for something that many white kids do exactly the same. Showing us the unlying racism in everyday society.

Lastly, The ending moment where the cop is creeping up on the man only because of his race, is just to show the pure hatred that many black people feel from police due to the repeating history of violence against them since the beginning of this country. Showing us that the police will only respond well to a white person but presume that they are not dangerous and taking the same precautions with them would be a waste of effort. This really stands out as a message of police brutality to me.
